James Sillwood: Author and Founder of the Jersey Writers Social Group

In October 2019, the Jersey Writers Social Group will celebrate its second birthday. Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to chat with author James Sillwood who is the founder of the Jersey Writers Social Group, to find out a bit more about his writing journey, as well as the recently published anthology of work by the Jersey Writers Social Group.

MANAGING DISAPPOINTMENT: Physical Exercise Might be the Answer

Disappointment comes in various guises.  Bad exam results, the guy you fancy... who doesn't fancy you and the job you wanted so badly, that you didn't get. So how do we cope with disappointment? Cutting a 20-foot hedge did it for me today... after I had re-booked the flights.  It took about 3 hours to cut and clear up. So, physical exercise may well be the answer to combatting disappointment... not necessarily with a hedge cutter in your hands.

BOOK EXTRACT: Just Say It

Just Say It is my first attempt at writing a novel.  It is the bittersweet story of Lisa Grant who struggles to overcome the emotional impact her narcissistic mother has had on her life.  She holds herself back from committing to a long-term relationship because she is terrified of turning into her mother, until the day she finally manages to say the words I love you.

ECLIPSING MYSELF: The New Improved Me

At dawn one morning I found myself talking to the Universe, well nobody else seemed to be listening and begging it to make my shit state of affairs go away. The mighty Universe must have heard, as shortly after my impassioned plea, I was scrolling through Facebook and found Julianne Palmer, a clairvoyant in Australia.  I noticed that one of my friends had liked her page, so I had a look. In the past, I had never paid too much attention to what the stars had to say about what fate lay in store for me, but I was desperate for an indication from somebody, that my life was going to improve.  So I took a leap of faith and picked a card.

REMAINER RANT – Together we are Stronger

The mighty M and S Bank Arena in Liverpool was built at a cost of £164 Million. Would you believe that £50 Million of the funding came from the EU? This is just ONE example of ONE city in the United Kingdom that has benefitted from EU funding. So, please remind me again... why are we leaving?

THE DOTAGE DIARIES – I’ve Finally Joined the Craft Club

So how come I can remember what my homework was when I was eleven and I can't remember which floor of the multi-story car park I left my car an hour earlier? Decreased blood flow to the brain, apparently, so I’m off to see if I can remember how to stand on my head to precipitate a rush of blood to my brains.

JERSEY WRITERS SOCIAL GROUP: AUTHOR INTERVIEW – ABIGAIL SUMMER

Extract from a frank and honest interview with Jersey Writers Social Group Member, Abigail Summer. TESSA:  What was the hardest part of writing this book? ABIGAIL: I wasn’t prepared for the emotional turmoil. Many of the things that Colette endured were my own experiences. Two scenes were particularly hard to write. The first is when Colin opens up to Leanne about his childhood; at an early age, he couldn’t understand why he was dressed as a boy when he identified as a girl. The bullying at school, and the loneliness of his early teenage years.

FLYING HIGH

On our final day in Liverpool, we crammed it all in. The Liverpool Museum, a ferry across the Mersey, duck and Cantonese noodles and prawn toast for a very late lunch, followed by my long-awaited mind-blowing experience.

Music, Multiculturalism, and More

Music is at Liverpool's heart and you can listen to live music just about everywhere, from buskers on street corners to bands playing in the pubs and restaurants.
