Starting a New Decade with a Bang (on the head)

I am not a great NYE’s reveller these days. I’d rather spend the evening in front of the fire at home sweet home with my favourite people.  Despite my reluctance to revel, I still managed to see 2020 in with a bang.

Only a handful of days ago, a friend of mine dropped into conversation that 2019 marked the end of a decade.  I had been so focused on what I am determined to achieve during 2020, the fact that another 10 years of my life had flashed by seemed to have escaped me.

Jools Holland and Stomzy, one of the NYE 2019 performers at Jools’ Hootenanny.

We ate chilli con Carne, apple crumble, and cheese, amazing ourselves that we still had the capacity to eat so much after the Christmas feeding frenzy.  We then played a rip-snorting game of Articulate, followed by my NYE highlight, watching Jools Holland’s Hootenanny.  And, last night’s show, had to have been one of the best.  It was so good, I will have to watch it again, stone-cold sober, on catch-up TV.

Fuelled by the music of Jools and friends, quite a lot of pinot grigio and a few cheeky Beirãos,  I chasséd up the stairs (not an easy thing to do), still singing…

🎵 Enjoy yourself it’s later than you think
Enjoy yourself while you’re still in the pink
The years go by as quickly as a wink
Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy yourself
It’s later than you think.
Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy yourself it’s later than you think🎵

For those of you unfamiliar with the word chassé… this is a chassé to the right…

I chasséd into bed around 2.30a.m.  And, whilst I was giving Cassie the Blog Dog a bedtime cuddle, my head was awash with images of both the good and the bad things that have happened to me during the last decade, as well as the odd NY’s resolution.

  • The people I have loved and lost
  • The people I’ve been fortunate enough to meet who have enriched my life
  • Karma
  • Being a better person in 2020
  • Being a better writer in 2020

NYE’s never fails to evoke a degree of emotion, even more so when it’s the end of a decade.  As a subconscious switch was about to turn on the emotional NYE waterworks, one of the five framed pictures above my bedhead, all embroidered by my late mother, just happened to fall on my head.

I had to laugh. Was it my mother’s way of wishing me a happy new year from some parallel universe?  Or was it the Universe itself sending me a positive sign that, if I keep a clear head, 2020 just might be my year?

Bring it on!

  1. Usually far too chilly here to go out on NYE, so we often stay in (as we did last night) and play games and watch favorite movies. Yesterday was “On the Waterfront” and “Casablanca,” accompanied by champagne and Christmas candy! Who could ask for anything more? Happy New Year, Tessa! May 2020 bring better news than 2019.
