An Exceptional Event – The 2017 Jersey Festival of Words

I hope the organisers of the 2017 Jersey Festival of Words allowed themselves a large gin and tonic last night after this amazing 5-day festival drew to a close; they certainly had cause to celebrate.

I said in my blog of 27th September 2017 that getting on and off the island of Jersey to track down literary events anywhere, has often presented a logistical challenge.  Not anymore, since 2015 we have been spoilt.  And the 2017 Jersey Festival of Words lived up to all expectations.

It was a wonderful, diverse lineup including ethologist, evolutionary biologist, and author Professor Richard Dawkins whose session sold out well in advance.  BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour Presenter, Dame Jenni Murray talking about her book A History of Britain in 21 Women; a real highlight for me, along with Deliciously Ella and our very own home-grown Blonde Plotters.  Not forgetting Alexander McCall Smith, John Boyne, Stef Penney, Daisy Buchanan, Clare Balding and Lauren Child, with many other events going on in the periphery.

We are so very lucky on this small island to have this prestigious event on our doorstep.  After five days I have come away with a huge adrenalin rush from having been under the same roof as some very inspirational people.

To Jennifer Bridge and team, this is a heartfelt thank you. Congratulations on organising an exceptional event and I look forward to adding the dates for the 2018 Jersey Festival of Words to my diary.
