Barry Manilow’s Copacabana The Musical 2014 tour has been at The Opera House this week and I went to see their final performance last night.
Barry Manilow recorded the song “Copacabana” also known as “Copacabana (At the Copa)”, in 1978. The song was written by Manilow, Jack Feldman and Bruce Sussman and it tells the story of showgirl Lola and her love affair with Tony, the barman at the Copacabana, who gets shot by love rival Rico.
Manilow, Feldman and Sussam went on to write a made-for-television musical called Copacabana in 1985 Manilow starring Manilow as Tony, which evolved into a full-length stage musical that ran at the West End’s Prince of Wales Theatre for two years (1994-96) prior to a lengthy UK Tour.
Back on the road again, this time starring Jon Lee (S Club 7, Les Miserables and Jersey Boys) as Tony Starr , Richard Grieve (Emmerdale, Priscilla Queen of the Desert) as Sam Silver the owner of The Copacabana and introducing Jennifer Harding as ‘Lola La Mar’.
Thankfully nobody gets shot in this production which has been scaled down for the smaller stage without losing and of it’s flamboyant glitziness and razzmatazz.
Fine performances by Sharon Sexton as Conchita Alvarez, who has just finished a run in The Commitments In the West End
and New Yorker Ricky Johnston as Rico – loved his voice!
This is vibrant and energetic cast, who give it 100% and Jersey audience lapped it up last night. We need more touring companies over here! For me the storyline was a little disjointed, but maybe it was just because I was too caught up in the glitz and the glamour, as well as the undisputedly fine Manilow, Feldman and Sussman show tunes.
