The West End Experience Comes To Jersey

My Father loved the Musical Theatre and from a very young age my parents took me to the West End shows. By the time I was 10, I was word perfect. I knew all of the songs from The King and I, South Pacific and My Fair Lady. But my first real recollection of the West End was seeing Charlie Girl in 1965 at the Aldelphi Theatre. Not one of the best known musicals of all time, but from that time I was hooked.

Since then, I have just about seen them all from The Sound of Music to The Rocky Horror Show. It would be impossible to chose a favourite but, when I was in the audience at the Jersey College for Girls last Friday night, I found myself sobbing during the song Tell Me It’s Not True from Blood Brothers, which I guess was a bit of a giveaway.

I have seen Blood Brothers many times and I confess that I am so hooked, I saw it twice in the same week when the show came to Jersey, but this was a slightly different performance, as the cast were aged between 8 and 18 and this was a Summer School. Not only that, the cast had just one week to put the show together. A show which included songs from several musicals. Singing, acting and dancing, it was all there.

So how do can you possibly put on on a show that is so full of energy in just one week. It is simple really, you bring in West End Professionals to give young wannabes the West End Experience.

Pianist, Songwriter, Singer and Producer, Dominic Ferris, ran two one week workshops in Jersey recently, along with his West End friends and colleagues. A friend of mine introduced me to Dominic’s music earlier on this year. I had never seen him play live before, but I got the opportunity to do so last Friday and he is undoubtedly the most talented pianists of his generation that I have had the privilege to listen to. His music includes pop/rock, classical and of course musical theatre. He trained at the Royal College of Music graduating in 2010 with an honours degree in piano performance and apart from his various other performances, he is one half of the Piano Brothers with Elwin Hendrijanto, another young virtuoso. But the rise of the Piano Brothers is a story for another day.

The enthusiasm that Dominic and his team put into the show, certainly rubbed off on to the students who were caught up in the experience of performing alongside West End stars.

So, if you are between the ages of 8 and 18 and would like to have the opportunity to appear alongside Dominic and his West End friends, check the website to see when they are next running classes in your part of the world. http://www.westendexperience.net/
